This Internet Age of Ours
Few days back, I was just wondering about this internet age of ours, the unlimited power of this invention. About a decade back, if I had to travel from my home (in Delhi) to my aunt’s place (in Mumbai), I would go to a ticket counter at a nearby railway reservation counter, stand in the queue for a long time waiting for my turn. And finally, when I reach the ticket window I would be sent back to change my train number as the reservation would not be available in the requested train. I cannot describe the disappointment, anguish and torture of booking a ticket. And did I mention I need to go at least a month in advance. But if, I have to travel today, all I need to do is just click, click and click. No waiting in long queues, no traveling involved to visit a nearby booking center. How convenient is all this.
A lot of us have reading as a hobby and even if you don’t have, at least , if you belong to a typical middle class Indian family, reading daily newspaper is a customary. Knowing the news and breaking it and discussing it with your friends is something very common, for which you need to read it. So every morning a newspaper boy will come on a bicycle and roll the newspaper, tie it and throw it on your door. ”Thap” goes the sound and when you hear it , you know for sure, even in your deep sleep that the day has started. But now it is all click, click and click. You can read news from all leading daily’s or local papers in your regional languages or news across globe. But I admit here I still prefer the printed paper.
Last month when I had to send money home but due to the busy schedule at office, I was finding it difficult to visit a bank and transfer money, I realized how having a net banking facility and availing it is of great convenience. So all I had to do was click, click and click.I found my long lost school and college friends on orkut,a popular networking site. Now I can easily be in touch with them.
So whether it is making online purchase or searching some information on the net, you can do it all. The best thing I like about internet most is that it’s a huge reservoir of information and you can get information on any topic be it spiritual, technical, scientific know-how, history ,geography, anything. This reminds me of the Aladdin’s little genie :-)
